Innovation Takes Center Stage at SIP Defense

Months of scientific inquiry culminated in a rigorous exchange of ideas as student researchers from Marikina High School defended their Science Investigatory Projects (SIP) before a panel of evaluators during the school’s annual Research Defense held at the Audio-Visual Room on July 14, 2026.

Bringing together both junior and senior high school researchers, the activity marked a significant milestone in the research process, allowing students to present the outcomes of their individual and group studies while demonstrating the scientific reasoning behind their investigations.

The defense was conducted in two sessions. The morning session, which commenced at 11:30 a.m., featured Grade 9 and Grade 11 student researchers, while the afternoon session, beginning at 1:00 p.m., accommodated Grade 10 and Grade 12 participants.

Throughout the defense, each research team presented the rationale, objectives, methodology, findings, conclusions, and recommendations of their studies. Following every presentation, the panel assessed the quality of the research by examining its scientific significance, methodological rigor, validity of data, and the researchers’ ability to justify their findings and respond to technical inquiries.

The activity was spearheaded by Science Department Head Teacher Mrs. Armila D. Esparrago, who also served as the research coordinator. Joining the panel was Mr. Jose Vincent Tabianan, Special Science Teacher I, whose expertise contributed to the evaluation of the students’ investigatory projects. Their comments and recommendations provided valuable guidance for researchers in refining their studies and strengthening their scientific communication skills.

More than an academic requirement, the SIP Research Defense challenged learners to think critically, defend their conclusions with evidence, and articulate the real-world relevance of their research. The activity also highlighted the importance of innovation, collaboration, and ethical research practices in addressing existing community and environmental concerns.

As Marikina High School continues to promote a strong research culture, the annual Science Investigatory Project Research Defense remains a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing scientifically literate, inquiry-driven, and solution-oriented learners prepared to contribute meaningful innovations beyond the classroom.
