As candidates of Miss Universe Philippines 2026 crossed the brightly lit stage in towering heels and elegant swimsuits, another Filipino creation quietly shared the spotlight — handcrafted shoes from Marikina City.
The SAFATOS Marikina collection was featured at Miss Universe Philippines 2026, with candidates wearing Marikina-made shoes during key segments, highlighting the city’s craftsmanship and Filipino heritage on a national stage.
The footwear was produced through a collaboration among the Philippine Footwear Federation Inc., the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Textile Research Institute, and the Marikina City government. Organizers said the partnership aimed to promote local industries and highlight the quality of Philippine-made products on a larger platform.
Known as the Shoe Capital of the Philippines, Marikina has built its identity around shoemaking for generations. From small family workshops to established local brands, the city’s industry has long symbolized Filipino craftsmanship and resilience. However, in recent years, local shoemakers have faced challenges from imported products and the growing dominance of fast fashion.
For Marikina shoemakers, the Miss Universe stage became more than a fashion opportunity. It became a moment of recognition for an industry that has continued stitching its way through economic struggles and changing consumer trends.
Several Marikina-based designers contributed to the featured collection, including Rowiliza Landicho of Roweliza, Vilma Fontilla of Jakob, and Marlyn Magbag of Zachy Shoes. Their designs incorporated Philippine tropical fabrics and handcrafted detailing, combining modern elegance with traditional artistry.
City officials welcomed the exposure, saying the appearance of Marikina-made shoes in a nationally televised pageant could help revive interest in the local footwear industry. Mayor Marjorie Ann Teodoro also emphasized the importance of supporting homegrown industries that continue to provide livelihood opportunities for local workers.
While the competition focused on crowns, confidence, and beauty, the appearance of Marikina-made footwear reminded viewers that Filipino excellence is not only worn by the candidates — it is also crafted by the hands working quietly behind the scenes.
